About This Spot

Walking into Matsuyama Shabu House in the heart of San Francisco’s Japantown, you’re greeted by an inviting warmth that immediately feels like a gathering place rather than just a restaurant. The hum of quiet conversations, the attentive clinking of chopsticks, and the soft steam rising from simmering hot pots create a comforting, slow-moving rhythm that invites you to pause and savor the moment. This is a spot where the mood is relaxed but intentional — where the art of sharing food takes center stage.

The dining experience here unfolds at its own natural pace, with each pot of broth gently bubbling and waiting for fresh, thoughtfully sliced ingredients to be swirled through it. The air carries subtle notes of rich umami and fragrant spices, setting a stage that feels both familiar and quietly special. It’s easy to settle into the experience as a celebration of connection — whether with family, friends, or even a quiet solo moment of enjoyment.

What stands out about Matsuyama Shabu House is how deliberate and heartfelt every element feels. The high-quality Japanese A5 ribeye wagyu, the fresh vegetables, and the layers of flavor in the broths speak to a craft that honors tradition while inviting a personal touch. Complemented by small shared dishes like garlic edamame or delicately seared mackerel, the meal becomes an unfolding story rather than a checklist of items.

The staff here add to the atmosphere in a way that feels genuine rather than scripted. Their attentiveness is felt not just in timely service but in the way they facilitate that sense of ease and belonging. It’s a place where you might notice the quiet laughter from the kitchen or a genuine smile from someone making sure your experience is right, making the whole visit feel quietly memorable.

For those who crave a meal where the focus is as much on the company and craft as on the food itself, Matsuyama Shabu House offers a warm, unhurried gateway into the pleasures of Japanese hot pot dining. It’s a reminder that great meals often live in moments of shared time and thoughtful flavors, where the pace slows down just enough to savor both.

ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! actually so amazing I was sad to leave. Haven't been to San Francisco in at least 5 or more years, my son (who is actually 7) pointed out this resteraunt and said he wanted hotpot. As a family we have been to a few different hotpot places, this one is by far the best. It is definitely the most expensive but it is WORTH it! We did get a premium wagyu option, and it was some of the best beef ive ever had, which I have had wagyu before but this one was just so crazy good. I got the golden chicken broth, my boyfriend got the spicy wagyu broth, we were both extremely happy with our choices. Our server also was extremely wonderful and super hilarious. Ive already asked my boyfriend if we can go back specifically here next year for my birthday, and my 7 year old thought the food was also very good, he says it is the best meat he has ever had. Thank you for the amazing experience! Appetizers were also amazing

I came to Japan town for my lady's birthday and didn't know wat to eat. We stumbled on this place and loved it. The chicken broth is amazing and the arrangement of different food to put in it. Great people great cooks i heard them laughing having a good time in the back. Just overall great experience that any one should try.

This is the best Shabu Shabu in San Francisco. We come here for all of our special celebrations. They have a huge counter where we can fit 12 family members all at once the beef is so high-quality! I’ve been to Japan so many times and I can tell you this place is very special!!!

Definitely one of the overlooked places in the area. The food is amazing, the staff is super friendly. The hotpot ingredients were all nice and fresh: the beef cuts, the vegetables, everything. I would specifically recommend trying lychee shrimp balls, those are out of this world.

Fantastic staffs and fantastic foods. We went in during a quiet Monday for some early holidays gathering. The meats quality is top notch and the available sides and veggies are more than plenty and delicious. We recommend the sukiyaki and tonkotsu base if possible. Although I prefer my Wagyu in a grilled style, Shabu Shabu is an excellent cooking option too. We did received news the Shabu Shabu option might be ending soon so please go visit them ASAP!
